In trauma-informed hypnotherapy, healing starts with safety, not with the trauma itself. The first sessions focus on helping your nervous system feel calm and in control, so that later work with difficult memories feels manageable rather than overwhelming.
Why safety comes first
Trauma often leaves people feeling a loss of control: on edge, easily triggered or disconnected. Jumping straight into painful memories can reinforce that feeling. A phased approach (stabilise first, process later, then integrate) is the accepted standard in trauma therapy, and hypnotherapy fits naturally into it.
1. Establishing a safe place
In a relaxed hypnotic state, you are guided to imagine a place where you feel completely safe and at ease: a quiet beach, a cosy room, a garden from childhood. The experience is made rich and multi-sensory: what you see, hear, smell and feel.
- How it helps: it gives you an inner sanctuary to return to whenever things feel too much, inside or outside sessions.
- Anchoring: the calm feeling is often linked to a simple gesture, such as touching thumb and forefinger, so you can call it up in daily life.
2. Ego strengthening
Ego strengthening uses direct and indirect suggestions, imagery and stories to build your sense of inner strength, self-worth and ability to cope. It reminds you of resources you already have, such as past moments of courage, people who support you and values that guide you.
3. Grounding and containment
You learn simple grounding skills (breathing, noticing your feet on the floor, naming what you can see) and imagery such as placing difficult material in a secure container until you’re ready to work with it. These skills make the rest of therapy feel safer.
What comes next
Once you feel stable and resourced, therapy can move gently towards processing memories. Read more in how hypnotherapy helps process traumatic memories safely, or see our trauma healing therapy page.
